Gum Therapy

Periodontal disease is classified according to its severity. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a more mild and reversible form of periodontal disease that affects the gums. Gingivitis can lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis.

Although there are many warning signs:

  • Gums bleed easily
  • Red, swollen, tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
  • Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
  • Changes in the way teeth fit together when biting
  • Changes in the fit of partial dentures

it is possible to have periodontal disease with out any obvious symptoms. This is one reason why it is so important to have regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations. Treatment methods depend upon the type of disease and how far the conditions have progressed. Our main goal is to establish stability such that we can reasonabley expect our patients to maintain good perio health on their own, with good homecare and routine dental visits. Education and oral hygiene instruction are key. Our hygienists Bonnie, RDH and Bob, RDH are excellent at this. Together with Dr. Orendorf they will diagnose, plan and treat your perio needs with a non-surgical approach. If you condition is more advanced, we will provide a referral to a periodontist. We work closely with some of the best specialists on the East coast, and they are local.

Perio disease is a serious condition. Current research confirms that oral health is directly linked to overall systemic health. Untreated gum and bone infections are linked to the following diseases and conditions:

  • Cardiovascular Disease (heart attack and stroke)
  • Diabetes
  • low birth weight (pre-term) babies
  • Pneumonia

We focus on treating periodontal infections to prevent tooth loss, but more importantly to facilitate whole-body health.
