Dentures

Dentures can be of benefit to you if you are missing all or just a few of your natural teeth. Dentures can be made to resemble your natural teeth so that there will be little change in your appearance. Dentures may even improve your look by giving you a more confident smile and help fill out the appearance of your face and profile.

Unfortunately dentures do not prevent bone loss over time in the upper and lower jaw bones or atrophy of the surrounding soft tissue and facial muscles. Therefore dentures usually need to be relined approximately every 4-5 years.

This loss of bone and facial tone will lead to a decrease in facial height and deepening of vertical lines in the lips and face. There can be a loss of tone in muscles of facial expression and thinning of the lips. The upper lip may increase in length so that fewer teeth show at rest and smiling, which ages the smile. The atrophy of muscles surroundeng the mouth eventually lead to jowls in the sides of the face and possibly "witches chin". The only way to help prevent this loss of bone and muscle tone is to have dental implants.
